A high level delegation led by Shri Akhilesh Mishra, Joint Secretary (North), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and comprising senior officers from the Northern and Finance Divisions of the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways visited Kathmandu for the 4th Meeting of the PSC for Terai Roads. The visiting delegation held extensive talks with the Nepalese side led by Shri Ramesh Raj Bista, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Works, DG(Department of Roads), DG(Department of Urban Development and Building Construction) and other senior officers of the Government of Nepal.

As a part of the meeting, a combined study team comprising both the delegations visited Birgunj on 17 April for a field visit for on-the-spot inspection of the roads being built with Government of India assistance. The team was briefed by RITES - the consultant for the projects. The team expressed satisfaction at the progress made on the work being carried out the roads and instructed the contractors to expedite the pace of work for timely completion of the project.

4. By way of background, Government of India is assisting in the construction of 1400 kms of Roads in the Terai region of Nepal . The project is being implemented in two phases. Phase-I of the project covers the development of 19 link/postal roads equaling 605 kms in the Terai area of Nepal. The roads were selected by the Government of Nepal and are presently
under various stages of construction. Being built at a cost of NRs. 1100, these roads would facilitate easier movement of goods and services in the country benefiting nearly 88 lakh people in the area. This would significantly accelerate the economic development of Nepal . Phase-I will be followed by Phase-II and will cover about 900 kms of roads.
