Indian Assistance to NNJS of NRs. 4.60 crores for Eye Care Programme

     Two separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed on December 5, 2011 by the Embassy of India, Kathmandu with Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) for providing grant assistance of NRs. 4.42 crores to NNJS for eye care programme in various districts of Nepal during the year 2011-2012. The MOU will cover the cost of conducting over 15,000 cataract surgeries and also provide over 9,300 optical devices to vision impaired children through mobile screening camps to be held in various schools of Nepal as a ‘National Eye Sight Programme’.  India will provide additional assistance of NRs. 0.18 crores for conducting 1000 Trachoma surgeries to the NNJS during the year 2011-2012.

       NNJS is an apex voluntary organisation, recognized by Government of Nepal as a National Society for Comprehensive Eye Care. It has 14 eye hospitals, 50 eye care centres and over 250 community-based organisations under its umbrella in various districts of Nepal . India has been providing assistance to NNJS for eye care programme in Nepal as part of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programmes in 2001. Under the programme, over NRs 16.50 crores has been provided to NNJS and more than 90,000 people have so far been cured of cataract and trachoma. Optical devices and spectacles have been distributed to over 27,000 school going children. A mobile eye care van fitted with ophthalmic equipment was also gifted to NNJS for implementation of this programme in 2009. The grant assistance will go a long way in addressing the curable eye problems/blindness among people of Nepal . The grant assistance will be used by NNJS to provide service at the doorstep of the people by way of mobile screening camps. 3.
