World Environment Day is commemorated each year on 5th June with the objective to promote awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action for safeguarding the same. The first World Environment Day was held in 1973 after the UN General Assembly held a Conference on the World Environment in June 1972. World Environment Day is organized by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is hosted every year by a different country with a different theme.
India is the global host of World Environment Day 2011. The theme of this year is "Forest, Nature at your Service". This theme emphasizes the intrinsic link between quality of life and the health of forests and forest ecosystems. Incidentally, UN has also declared this year as the International Year for Forests.
Indian Government has initiated several programmes to counter the pressure on forests in densely populated areas due to increasing cultivation and overgrazing. These include tree planting system to combat land degradation and desertification. The celebration of World Environment Day 2011 in India will emphasize how individual actions can have an exponential impact. Events will include variety of activities ranging from school tree planting drives to community clean ups, car free days, city park clean up initiatives and several exhibitions.
To mark this event, the Consulate General of India, Birgunj in association with Lion's Club is organizing Tree Plantation Programme at the Consulate premises in Birgunj (0700 Hrs.) and the Indian Embassy Bungalow, Raxaul (0900 Hrs.) on Sunday, 5th June, 2011.
