Ambassador of India to Nepal Shri Rakesh Sood handed over a cheque of NRs. 166.30 million to H.E. Shri Bishnu Prasad Paudel, Hon'ble Minister of Water Resources, Government of Nepal on behalf of the Government of India towards India's contribution for the construction of embankments along Bagmati, Kamala, Lalbakeya and Khando rivers. India has long assisted Nepal in works relating to extension of embankments along rivers flowing from Nepal into India to control floods in Nepal and adjoining territories in India.
2. The assistance is being extended in accordance with the decisions of the Nepal-India Sub-Committee on Embankment Construction. India had provided assistance of NRs 165 million for similar activity to the Government of Nepal in the year 2008. During the current year, India has already provided assistance of NRs. 151.2 million for these projects in the month of February. With the present assistance, the total grant aid for embankment construction during 2009 now stands at 317.50 million.

Ambassador also signed four separate Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) with Mr. Shankar Prasad Koirala, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, GON to provide grant assistance of NRs 109.96 million to DWIDP for construction of (i) emergent protection works on Trijuga River in Udayapur District; (ii) extension of embankment along right bank of Sunsari River, Narshing VDC in Sunsari District, (iii) river training works on Lakhandehi river in Sarlahi District and (iv) river protection works on Kankai River in Jhapa district . These works are being undertaken at the request of Ministry of Water Resources, Government of Nepal for implementation under the Small Development Projects of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme.
4. These works will help control floods and save habitation and valuable agriculture land along the banks of the respective rivers. The works will be implemented by the Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention (DWIDP) as per the norms and regulations of GON, who will be fully responsible for the quality and timely completion of the projects. An oversight committee comprising representatives of DWIDP and local development bodies will ensure community participation in overseeing the project implementation.
5. India remains committed to continue working closely with Nepal to further develop cooperation in water resources so that these contribute to development and prosperity of the two close and friendly neighbouring countries.
